It was cold and overcast when I checked in this morning at Gaiety Hollow.  Undaunted, Woody was on a ladder putting the finishing pruning touches on the sasanqua camellia for this season…

He explained about opening the interior of the plant this season and waiting for the new buds to form before he can prune front to back next year…

There were tools everywhere…

David showed me the old gate that had been stored in the Deepwood coach house…this one designed by L&S about 10 years after the house was built…they replaced the architect Clarence Smith’s gate with one of their own design.

After about 60 years of service, it was replaced with this metal gate….

Friday is volunteer day at Gaiety Hollow so I headed over there this morning…

The volunteers were taking their coffee break and “talking gardens”…

Along with the blueberry banana bread, Gretchen had Judith Tankard’s excellent book on the early and influential garden designer Ellen Biddle Shipman (for whom Edith Schryver worked in New York for City 5 years in the 1920’s)…

Gretchen had been searching for evidence that Shipman had ever used a white Lutyen’s-type bench in any of her gardens…and…

This is good news because we have such a bench, thanks to Nan and George Happ (kindly donated when they moved to an urban loft last year), look for it later this season!

But the talk turned to soil and compost and less glamorous topics…because every garden has less glamorous topics…

which make the more glamorous things possible…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the garden.  LOTS of pruning has been going on including work on the sasanqua camellia near the back door…Here it is when arborist Woody Dukes was just under way…

Woody kept working…

In the meantime garden volunteers Shirlee Sliger and Jay Raney worked on opposite side of the big central pergola….

The two tree peonies are beautiful, though taking a beating in the rain…(I sometimes wish they didn’t bloom so early…)

and though Woody sent me all these nice pruning photos, I really wanted a quick walk through the garden this morning by myself.  It was cool, sunny, a little wet…the birds were singing and the tulips were up…I was happy to be there!

I wasn’t in the garden this week, but the core group of loyal volunteers were, and here are Woody Dukes’ photos of the hard work that they were able to do.   Woody was in the garden doing some fence repair…

GH2

Leaves had been raked against the fence from the other side causing a big build-up of leaves as well as some needed repair work to the fence panel…

GH1

But MEANWHILE…a crew of the most hard working and dedicated volunteers got really AGGRESSIVE about cleaning out the beds, digging out every leaf and stick they could find…in preparation for another crew to come in with mulch to cover the new irrigation lines as well as burying emerging weeds…and eventually providing moisture retention in what looks like will be the hot summer months ahead.  Leaves, twigs, fallen camellias…all had to go…hats off to this crew (and if this inspires you, they are working again next Friday…Come on down!)

The sprinklers are in, the porta-potty is gone, and now as late fall closes in, the garden will have a welcome dormant time to “regroup” and heal.  First the nice long views…

…the new drip system looks like it will make a big difference, come spring…

and the trenches are nicely filled in (a bit muddy, but not too bad…)

but the most amazing part of this November visit was the big camellia near the kitchen door…in full bloom!  Ahh gardens…roll on winter!

Hooray…the two week process of installing new sprinklers and a drip system for the beds began this week, executed by Kevin Schindler’s Autumn Leaf Landscaping.  We stopped by today to check the progress…the pvc pipe is ready…

PVC 2

the trench in the allee has been dug (this trench incidentally will carry 8-9 pipes each of which will feed various parts of the system)

the trench

and in the digging they found an old piece of iron pipe from a much earlier system…

the old pipe

the lines are drawn indicating pipelines, and the white flags denote sprinkler heads for the grassy areas…

and here’s the coiled drip hose…

Stay tuned for a progress report, and in the meantime, check out the boxwoods!!

Here’s the “before”, on the day they were trimmed…

and today…gardens do continually amaze us 🙂

Newspaper Mulch

Aegopodium, Deepwood, Gaiety Hollow, Historic Gardens, Lord and Schryver, newspaper mulch, weed control

Friday morning at Gaiety Hollow, sunny and bright…

8

Gretchen was already there with a load of mulch…

1

They are putting down a newspaper mulch to keep down the aegopodium.  The method is as follows:  water heavily the night before, place newspapers all over the desired area,3wet newspapers fully…

2

layer mulch—3-8 inches dep7ending on the situation…on top of newspapers

cover newspapers fully with mulch…

mulch

cross fingers for a good result.

NOTE:  The tea garden at Deepwood IS a Lord and Schryver design, but no planting plan exists so the restoration has included a bit of guesswork according to what was in the garden and the plant lists favored by L&S.
